Hello, Friends of LARRY TRONCO!

I wanted to make a more formal post on this blog, www.larrytronco.blogspot.com, just as a quick summary of the last 15 years of LARRY TRONCO.  Then as I was starting out, I felt that it would be much better to write it as a letter because after all, you were not just his ex-colleagues in advertising, co-artists in the very young Philippine Art Scene, or ex-students at the University of Sto. Tomas where he once was a professor, or ex-employees in his graphic design studio in Bel-Air, Makati.  You were all his dear friends!

Larry Tronco - 1929-1985

From the time I set up the Larry Tronco Facebook Page in 2011, there have been a lot of comments posted on the page about how great a professor my late dad was.  My heart is so full seeing all those posts describing how he was prior to my coming into this world.

By the time I was born, Larry Tronco was still teaching in UST.  I am still trying to look for the files when my dad actually left his job as a professor in UST.  My hunch is that it was about 1970.

Just as a quick overview to those pre-martial law days, we were living in Makati then.  Dad had a graphic design studio which did a lot of the designs and layouts for Pepsi-Cola.  LARRY TRONCO was always a Pepsi guy.  We never had a bottle of Coca Cola in our house.

The advertising and graphic design work under Tronco Design Studio was at its peak in 1973 to 1975.  Employed in the studio were some of his best students in UST.  Most of the work revolved around Pepsi though there were other jobs from other clients like the French embassy and a few real estate companies.

Though the graphic design studio was on the upswing, a major decision took a turn one day in 1975 when we packed our bags and put other stuff in boxes to board a ship to Bacolod, Negros Occidental.

In Negros Occidental, where my late dad really came from, he got himself busy with farming and with his involvement in the local art scene.

In 1977, he started an outdoor advertising company, Tronco & Associates, which eventually became a corporation as Tronco Advertising Co., Inc. in 1979.  The advertising company did billboards for Pepsi and San Miguel Beer (and other SMC products) all over the Visayas and Mindanao.

Larry's main clientele were the ad agencies in Manila, old friends from his J. Walter Thompson days who by now were senior executives.

Outdoor advertising was what kept Larry busy until 1985.  He was busy to a point that he would only paint occasionally and have a few exhibitions.

Early in 1985, through a biopsy done in Manila, it was found out that my dad had amyloidosis.  Amyloidosis is a rare disease which to this day has no cure.

From that biopsy in Manila, Larry Tronco went back to Bacolod hoping to recuperate.  The deterioration of his health was quick and he succumbed to the illness by end of September in 1985.  He was 56 years old when he passed away.

I hope to put in more details as the days go by so please feel free to check on this blog every now and then as well as Larry Tronco's Facebook Page.

Until then, stay safe, Friends of LARRY TRONCO!
Lloyd Tronco

The Painter's Eye--

In 1953, J. Elizalde Navarro had written this in a magazine column.

The title of the column was The Painter's Eye - with respects to Maurice Gosser, well-known New York artist who wrote a book entitled "The Painter's Eye."

This column will be dedicated to reporting on the doings of our local art world especially that of the painters. From time to time I will feature a personality of up and coming artists. And, I promise to present him as he is seen thru a painter's eye. My first personality is Larry Tronco. Young artist from Negros. He is presently connected with an advertising agency and was formerly the Art Editor of the University of Santo Tomas' "Varsitarian."

Larry Tronco came home from a year's stay in the Escuela Central de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, Spain. The scholarship under the Instituto de Cultura Hispanica of the Spanish Government made it possible for him to look at the famous Prado and other museums, tour the countryside and missed being solicited by beautiful Spanish girls at the famous Gran Via. In school he was subjected to drawing from casts and elementary composition which he had painfully executed while still a student in the College of Fine Arts in the University of Santo Tomas. Nevertheless he drew and was easily on top of a lot of scholars under the same scholarship plan. He had classmates from the United States, Peru, Brazil, Columbia, etc.

It is noteworthy to mention that with a lot of disturbing factors obtaining in Spain, he has emerged with a style not quite really his own, but worth developing. Before he left for spain, I noticed this style, but then his figures had no trace yet of the miserabilism proportion. His "Vendedores Ambulantes" won for him the first prize in the Semana Filipina — a celebration for the Filipino scholars in Spain. Among those who participated in the contest were Cesar Legaspi and Arturo Luz both in the same scholarship with Larry Tronco. The outcome really did not determine that Larry Tronco is better than the two.  And speaking comparatively, a lot of our local art winners are not much better artists than their participating contemporaries.  Larry Tronco is also a cartoonist.  Somewhere in these pages are littered his cartoons about Spain.  He has been doing this style for some time before he went to Spain.  Some will say that his cartoons smack like Elmer Abustan's style, but then he is a better draftsman than Abustan any old time.
